Heritage walks in Hyderabad are becoming popular as people want to learn about the city’s history. A group of heritage enthusiasts recently took a walk to celebrate World Heritage Day. The event included a photo exhibition at the State Museum in Public Gardens, organized by the Department of Heritage and INTACH Hyderabad Chapter.
On World Heritage Day, various groups and departments conducted heritage walks in different parts of the city. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) led a walk from Darulshifa to Osmania General Hospital, focusing on the city’s development after the 1908 flood. Participants saw old and new photos of landmarks like the municipal building and Salar Jung Museum.
The walk allowed participants to experience Hyderabad’s heritage, including old buildings, religious sites, and architectural wonders. The GHMC Commissioner highlighted efforts to preserve important heritage structures, such as renovating Moazam Jahi Market and other historical sites at a cost of Rs 18.33 crore.
The GHMC also plans to complete renovation projects under the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project, including restoring six kamans around Charminar. The Department of Heritage and INTACH Hyderabad organized a photo exhibition and talk on ‘Monumental Heritage – its protection for posterity’ at the State Museum.
Another heritage walk took place at Shri Laxman Bagh Venkateshwara Swamy temple and Golconda stepwells at Qutub Shahi Tombs. Heritage activist Mohammed Abid Ali emphasized the importance of preserving Hyderabad’s rich heritage on World Heritage Day and promoting cultural exchanges and heritage walks for future generations to appreciate.
