Hyderabad: The city of Hyderabad experienced heavy rains on Sunday evening, which led to waterlogging in many areas and colonies. On Monday, light to moderate rains continued, further disrupting daily life and flooding low-lying parts of the city.
The rains persisted throughout the night, resulting in severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas. This caused significant traffic disruptions on Monday morning. Gachibowli recorded the highest rainfall in the city with 97 mm, according to the Telangana Development Planning Society. Other areas like Serilingampally received 86 mm, Lingampally 85.8 mm, Kukatpally 85 mm, and LB Nagar 62 mm.
In addition to these areas, other parts of Hyderabad also saw considerable rainfall, with drizzles continuing throughout the day. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that light to moderate rains will continue across Hyderabad for the next 24 hours. The IMD also reported that during the current Southwest monsoon, Hyderabad recorded 573.9 mm of rainfall, which is 23 percent higher than the normal 466.9 mm.
Within the city, Khairtabad experienced the highest deviation from normal rainfall, receiving 683.3 mm against the usual 482.5 mm, marking a 42 percent increase.
The continuous rains over the past two days have caused waterlogging in many parts of Hyderabad, disrupting daily life. Local authorities are on high alert, closely monitoring the situation, and advising residents to take necessary precautions.
In the Shankarpally Mandal of Rangareddy District, floodwaters have inundated La Paloma Villas in Mokila, submerging around 200 villas. Allegations suggest that the flooding may have been caused by encroachment on a nearby lake.
The floodwaters also affected nearby villages along the stream. Residents believe that the construction of the villas disrupted the natural flow of the Nala, leading to the flooding. They noted that these villas are often affected by floodwaters during the rainy season, and the heavy rainfall has only worsened the situation.
Additionally, over 60 houses in Allapur and Kukatpally areas were flooded following the heavy rains on Sunday. Several colonies in Moosapet, Rajiv Gandhinagar, and Safdarnagar were also submerged as the Maisamma Cheruvu overflowed. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)’s Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams assisted residents by draining water and removing debris. Due to the ongoing heavy rainfall, GHMC has advised residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. In case of emergencies, residents can contact the GHMC helpline at 040-21111111 or 9000113667 (DRF), and they can also reach out to the corporation via social media.
