Heavy Rains Cause Chaos in Hyderabad
Heavy rains caused widespread havoc in Hyderabad on Tuesday morning, claiming the life of a 43-year-old man. The downpour began around 4 AM and continued for several hours, leading to severe flooding and traffic disruptions across the city. Many low-lying areas were completely submerged, with stormwater drains overflowing and impacting normal life.
The heavy rains led to massive traffic jams on all major roads in Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and Cyberabad. Residents in low-lying areas faced significant challenges, with many forced to wade through knee-deep water. Power outages were also reported in several parts of the city due to the flooding.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad has issued a weather alert for the city, predicting light to moderate rain or thundershowers with occasional intense spells over the next three days.
Several areas in the city were hit hard by the rains, with places like Saroornagar recording 132.3 mm of rainfall, Khairatabad 126.8 mm, Uppal 125 mm, Rajendranagar 122.8 mm, and LB Nagar 122 mm by 7 AM. Other areas such as Marredpally, Bahadurpura, Golconda, Nampally, and Charminar received around 100 mm of rainfall, with the rain continuing till night.
Tragically, a man named Vijay, who was 43 years old and lived in Ramnagar, lost his life due to the flooding. He was washed away while trying to cross the road near Parsigutta in Musheerabad. Vijay had left his house early in the morning to go to work.
In another incident, lightning struck an apartment in the Panjagutta area, damaging a car and snapping power lines. The main road under the Malakpet Railway Bridge was heavily flooded, causing severe traffic disruptions. Other areas such as Chandrayangutta-Bandlaguda stretch, Dabeerpura, Yakutpura, Tolichowki, Yousufguda, Saroornagar, and LB Nagar were also heavily flooded, bringing traffic to a standstill.
The heavy rains also caused trees to be uprooted and cars to be washed away in several areas. A video went viral on social media showing a man on a bike in Ramnagar narrowly escaping being swept away by floodwaters, thanks to bystanders who rescued him.
Due to the severe weather, all government and private schools in the Greater Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts declared a holiday. Exams scheduled for Tuesday were postponed. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued an alert, urging residents of low-lying areas to remain vigilant.
The GHMC has also provided emergency contact numbers for assistance. Citizens are advised to dial 040-21111111 or 9000113667 for GHMC-DRF support.
