Hyderabad: On Monday, the city of Hyderabad experienced heavy rain, which was much more intense than the light-to-moderate rainfall that had been forecast. The downpour disrupted Raksha Bandhan celebrations, as many families who were visiting their loved ones found themselves stuck due to the sudden weather change.

While the rain brought relief from the recent heat and humidity, it also created significant problems. Waterlogging became a major issue, especially in low-lying areas of the city, where roads were submerged. The downpour, which lasted for just half an hour, caused chaos across various parts of the city. Areas like Yousufguda, Tolichowki, Shaikpet, Attapur, and Upperpally were particularly affected, with water entering houses and flooding roads. In Tolichowki, near Rumaan Hotel, the water level reached knee-deep. Similarly, in Shaikpet, the entire road was submerged as rainwater accumulated on both sides of the central median.

The heavy rain also led to severe traffic problems. Waterlogging and traffic jams were reported in areas like Madhapur, Jubilee Hills, Kukatpally, Yousufguda, Ameerpet, Punjagutta, and Kachiguda. Vehicles were moving slowly due to the waterlogged roads, making commuting a challenging task for residents.

Other parts of the city, such as Paradise, CTO, Rasoolpura, Prakashnagar, PTI, Mahaveer, and Masab Tank, also experienced slowed traffic due to the water accumulation. The situation frustrated many citizens, who turned to social media to share their experiences. One user, Srikanth Manda, commented, “Just a short spell of rain can create havoc in Hyderabad. All that glitter is not gold.” Another user, Vyas Lakhan, remarked, “Welcome to Hyderabad. The corruption failed to rectify drainage water flow.”

In response to the waterlogging, traffic police, along with Disaster Response Force (DRF) workers, worked to clear the rainwater from the main roads in various affected areas.

Meanwhile, the heavy rains also caused water leakage inside the terminal at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA). A video circulating on social media showed passengers walking through the terminal as water dripped from the roof onto the floor, raising concerns about the airport’s infrastructure during extreme weather.

After the video went viral, Hyderabad Airport authorities acknowledged the leakage and issued a statement. “We immediately inspected the roof, and there is absolutely no leakage/choking/water stagnation/foreign objects on the roof. Our team is engaging with the technical experts to ensure this spillage into the terminal should not happen again,” they stated.

The authorities also assured the public that they are closely monitoring the weather conditions and are prepared to address any challenges that arise due to the heavy rainfall. They apologized for any inconvenience caused by the incident.
