The Telangana High Court has ordered the State government to stop building an “integrated municipal solid waste processing unit” in Pyaranagar, Gummadidala mandal, Sangareddy district. Justice Kunuru Lakshman directed that no construction should take place until further notice. However, the government is allowed to conduct a land survey and lay roads for the project. The court has given the government ten days to submit counter-affidavits before the next hearing.

The court was hearing a petition filed by A. Swarnalatha, a resident of Bollineni Homes, Madhapur. She argued that the project would harm the environment, wildlife, and people living nearby. She requested the court to stop all activities related to the project.

The petitioner’s lawyer, Kailash Nath, informed the court that the village is located within 15 km of the Dundigal Air Base. He claimed that the government decided to build the waste processing unit without obtaining environmental clearance or conducting an environmental impact study. He also pointed out that the Air Force Academy at Dundigal had raised similar concerns. The lawyer further argued that the dump yard would cause air and water pollution near the Nallavally reserve forest.

Despite a previous court order stopping such work, the government is still moving forward with the project, the lawyer stated. However, Advocate-General A. Sudarshan Reddy defended the government’s actions. He said that no permission was needed because the project does not involve any landfill work. He explained that the main goal of the project is to separate waste and generate power and bio-gas.

After hearing both sides, the court postponed the case for ten days to allow the government to respond.
