The Health Minister of Telangana, T Harish Rao, celebrated the laying of the foundation stone for a new 2,000-bed block at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). He called it a historic occasion for Hyderabad and said that the city is on track to become a hub for healthcare. The Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao, has ambitious plans to build more hospitals and beds across the state, including super-specialty hospitals and a Health City in Warangal.
Minister Harish Rao praised the government’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, including establishing Basti Dawakhanas to provide healthcare services in slum areas and setting up dialysis centres with single-use filters. The government is also committed to building one medical college per district, which will provide over 8,000 medical seats for students in Telangana.
He highlighted the Nutrition Kits initiative to address iron deficiency among pregnant women and the Kanti Velugu programme for eye care, which has gained interest from other states. The Director of NIMS, Beerappa, praised the hospital’s expansion to become the largest facility in the country with 4,000 beds. He also mentioned the hospital’s efforts in providing free organ transplants to economically disadvantaged individuals.
Overall, the event was seen as a significant milestone in the development of healthcare in Telangana.
