In Hyderabad, many trees have been cut down or improperly pruned in the last two months for development projects. This has raised concerns among environmental enthusiasts. The Vata Foundation, along with other environmentalists, is planning an awareness campaign to promote tree maintenance and protection.
Reports show that more than 300 trees have been chopped down without notice for road extensions and railway station expansions in areas like Bowenpally, Moosapet, Hitech City, Medchal, and Banjara Hills. Uday Krishna, a green enthusiast and founder of Vata Foundation, expressed worries about the increasing tree chopping for development despite government efforts like Harithaharam. He highlighted issues like new trees being uprooted and existing trees not receiving proper maintenance.
Krishna mentioned that trees are often misused for publicity, with posters hung on them, and tree guards neglected once trees are fully grown. To address these problems, a cleanup drive and awareness campaigns are being planned to educate people about the importance of protecting and maintaining trees. The main goal is to prevent trees from being harmed by practices like nailing, which can weaken their growth and lead to drying up. Maintaining the city’s green cover is crucial, especially with frequent tree cutting for road projects.
The Vata Foundation aims to raise awareness about tree maintenance and protection through their upcoming campaign. They believe that municipal bodies should take responsibility for maintaining fully grown trees to prevent issues like nailing and ensure the health of the city’s greenery. By educating the public on the significance of preserving trees, they hope to mitigate the negative impact of tree cutting for development activities.
