Hyderabad experienced a record-breaking power demand of 79.48 million units on Thursday, March 28th due to high temperatures. Last year, the peak demand was 79.33 million units in May, but this year it exceeded 79 million units in March alone, indicating a potential increase in demand in the future. In comparison, the highest consumption in March last year was 67.97 million units.
Officials from the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana (TSSPDCL) reported that the average power consumption in Greater Hyderabad during March last year was 57.84 million units. However, this year, the average consumption rose to over 70.96 million units, marking a 22.7% increase from the previous year.
The TSSPDCL officials attribute the rise in consumption to the availability of adequate electricity and consistent supply within Greater Hyderabad. They predict that power consumption may reach 90 million units in the near future.
Musharraf Ali Faruqui, CMD of TSSPDCL, has been holding daily meetings with senior officials to monitor power supply, demand, outages, and staff attendance. He has also been visiting areas experiencing power cuts and instructed department officials to work until 9 pm daily. Additionally, he directed higher-ranking officials to inspect slums and colonies weekly to assess the power situation in those areas.
