Telangana Government Achieves Milestone in Energy Sector
The Telangana government has made significant progress in improving the energy sector during the one-year ‘Praja Palana’ rule. After years of challenges, the government successfully revived the electricity sector, putting an end to a decade of setbacks. Key initiatives were taken to benefit farmers and the underprivileged, ensuring that crucial schemes continued without disruption.
In its first year, the government implemented innovative policies to rescue power companies that were nearing bankruptcy. A judicial commission was set up to investigate issues related to the construction of Yadadri and Bhadradri power stations, as well as irregularities in earlier power purchase agreements. Notably, uninterrupted power supply was maintained throughout the state, and this was achieved without increasing electricity tariffs.
One of the government’s standout achievements is the implementation of the Gruha Jyoti scheme, which is part of its six guarantees. Under this scheme, electricity up to 200 units is provided free of charge to consumers. As a result, nearly 50 lakh families across Telangana received zero electricity bills, offering significant financial relief to households.
Additionally, free electricity is being provided to 39,067 educational institutions across the state. For this purpose, the government allocated a subsidy of ₹101.57 crore. This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to supporting education and reducing the burden on schools.
In a historic achievement, Telangana has also climbed the ranks in terms of daily electricity demand. The state, which was ranked eighth in maximum electricity demand in August 2023, has now moved up to fifth place. This progress puts Telangana ahead of several larger states, showcasing its growing energy capacity and infrastructure development.
