Several mobile apps and individuals are offering liquor delivery services in Hyderabad, attracting liquor consumers. However, the Telangana Prohibition and Excise Department is working to crack down on this illegal practice. Despite the fact that home delivery of alcohol is against the law, this business has been thriving at night after regular wine shops have closed. Telangana Prohibition and Excise Commission Commissioner E Sridhar has expressed concern over this trend since January 25, warning that strict action will be taken against those who violate excise laws.
A new law may need to be established to allow legal door-to-door delivery of liquor. The commissioner emphasized that anyone participating in such deliveries is breaking the law. The Excise Department is planning raids, but faces challenges due to the unique operational model. Suppliers purchase liquor based on customer orders, draw bills in the buyer’s name, and then online marketing agencies deliver the liquor.
In other states, door delivery of liquor continues to be permitted. During the pandemic in the national capital, the government introduced door delivery of liquor, which saw a positive response. This led to increased income for delivery companies. In Hyderabad, however, some brokers are supplying drugs in their own way and extorting money.
