Hyderabad: The State government is considering launching an investigation into the possible misuse of funds that were allocated to the Digital Media wing. This wing was directly managed by the IT Department during the previous BRS government. According to reports, approximately Rs 15 crore had been released to promote State-sponsored schemes. However, it is believed that some of these funds were also used for the BRS party’s campaign before the 2023 Assembly elections.
At the time, KT Rama Rao, who was the IT minister, is suspected of approving the release of these funds. There are allegations that a portion of the amount may have been redirected to support the party’s campaign activities.
Sources say that the operations of the digital media wing and the spending of funds during the 10-year rule of BRS are currently under scrutiny. The entire digital media wing was under the control of KTR, and he was reportedly involved in overseeing activities such as hiring people to post content on social media. The government is now reviewing the orders that authorized the release of funds and the expenses incurred each year. If any evidence of fund misuse emerges, the role of senior officials in the digital media wing will also be investigated.
The IT Department is already examining whether any false bills were submitted by top officials in the digital media wing to obtain more funds. Sources indicated that digital media played a major role in the BRS party’s election campaign, with large sums of money spent on TV ads and songs featuring popular singers. The government suspects that some of the funds from the State treasury were misappropriated for the BRS election campaign.
