In Hyderabad, ten medical colleges, including eight government and two private ones, have applied to set up new colleges. The National Medical Commission will now review these institutions to ensure the right ratio of seats to hospital beds.
The National Medical Commission’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) is currently reviewing applications for new medical colleges and an increase in MBBS seats for the academic year 2024-25. The State government plans to start eight new medical colleges during this period, adding to the existing 26 government medical colleges.
With the addition of eight new colleges, the total number will rise to 34. This expansion will ensure that every district has a government medical college, with institutions like Gandhi and Osmania in Hyderabad. The number of available MBBS seats is also set to increase from 3,915 to 4,315.
The NMC has set strict guidelines for granting permission for new medical colleges. Each approved college must have 21 departments, including essential subjects like anatomy and physiology. They must also meet specific bed-to-seat ratios, such as 220 beds for 50 seats or 420 beds for 100 seats.
Faculty requirements are also outlined by the NMC, with specific ratios of professors, associate professors, and other roles based on the number of seats in the college. Additionally, the commission has provided a list of necessary equipment for teaching MBBS students in both college and hospital settings.
Overall, these new regulations and guidelines aim to ensure that all medical colleges meet the necessary standards for providing quality education and training to future healthcare professionals.
