A residential complex called Steel and Mines, built 35 years ago in Hyderabad, is facing land encroachment issues by some shopkeepers who run a tiles business on the approach road. This road is shared by two big complexes, Steel and Mines and Tulasi Apartments in Srinagar Colony. The Steel and Mines Complex has over 100 families, with some flats owned by the Government of India’s Navaratna company, Steel Authority of India.
Residents have been complaining since 2019 about customers parking vehicles on the public road, blocking access to the flats. When security officials ask them not to park on the road, they are threatened. This has caused problems for ambulances trying to enter the complex, and shopkeepers have been hostile towards the residents’ welfare society.
The shop owners have now started unauthorized construction on the connecting road, which could worsen traffic congestion and lead to accidents. Residents fear that in case of a fire, it would be difficult for fire engines to reach the complex, and children boarding school buses face obstacles. Despite objections from the society and appeals to traffic police and GHMC, the encroachments have not been addressed.
Residents have lodged complaints with the GHMC grievance cell following the latest encroachment and have received acknowledgment. They are urging authorities to take immediate action to clear the approach road for the safety and convenience of residents.
