The Chief Minister of Hyderabad, K Chandrashekhar Rao, wants to turn community-based ‘Self-Respect Bhavans’ into ‘Knowledge Centres’. These centres will provide information to those in need, especially students and entrepreneurs. They will also help people from the Most Backward Sections develop skills for their livelihood. The state government will spend nearly Rs 90 crore to build around 40 Self-Respect Bhavans in Hyderabad. The Banjara Bhavan and Komaram Bheem Bahvan for tribal communities, and Brahmin Sadan at Gopanpally, have already been inaugurated by the Chief Minister.

Initially, the Self-Respect Bhavans were meant for community-based programs. But after they were built, KCR thought that they could be promoted as ‘Knowledge Centres.’ These buildings have internet and computer facilities, and a group of people to guide visitors about opportunities and government schemes meant for them to develop a career. The Banjara Bhavan has become a hub for students who want to go abroad and pursue studies.
