Former YSRCP MLC Mohammed Iqbal has joined the TDP after quitting his party and resigning from his post. Iqbal, a retired Inspector General (IG) who entered politics through YSRCP, previously served as Rayalaseema IG and as Chief Security Officer to Chandrababu Naidu when he became Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 1995.

In the 2019 elections, Iqbal ran for the Hindupur MLA seat against TDP candidate Nandamuri Balakrishna on behalf of YSRCP but lost. Despite being an MLC until 2027, Iqbal decided to leave YSRCP. He was unhappy that the party’s Hindupur ticket went to Deepika for the upcoming elections and had conflicts with local YSRCP members, prompting his departure. In his resignation letter, Iqbal cited personal reasons for leaving.
