Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has tested positive for COVID-19 and suspended his tour of the Yucatan peninsula. López Obrador, who has previously suffered from two bouts of the virus, said in his social media accounts that his isolation in Mexico City would only be for “a few days” and that his heart was “100 percent.” The president has refused to enact mandatory mask mandates and famously refused to wear a mask unless absolutely necessary, such as on airline flights. He declined to use Mexico’s presidential jet, which he recently announced had been sold to Tajikistan. During his isolation, Interior Secretary Adán Augusto López will fill in at the daily presidential morning news briefings.
