Heavy rains in Telangana have caused disruptions in daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in the next 48 hours. In response, the state government has declared holidays for government offices and educational institutions in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits on Friday and Saturday. Areas such as LB Nagar and Anand Nagar have experienced water entering houses due to the heavy rainfall.
The authorities are closely monitoring irrigation projects, rivers, and reservoirs due to the heavy inflows in the Godavari river basin. An alert has been issued at Bhadrachalam as heavy inflows from upstream areas have been observed in the river. People have been advised to cancel travel plans and stay indoors as more rain is expected over the next two days. Some habitations near the Godavari basin have reported submergence due to flood waters in old Khammam and Kamareddy districts.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has taken the situation seriously and instructed the Hyderabad Collector to go to Bhadrachalam to monitor the flood situation and carry out relief and rescue operations. Officials in the Medical and Health, Municipal Administration, Panchayat Raj, Irrigation, and other emergency services have been asked to cancel leaves and holidays to work round the clock.
Horticulture crops in Rangareddy, Medak, and Vikarabad districts have suffered damage due to the heavy rains. However, officials state that these rains are beneficial for the kharif crop. The catchment areas of River Godavari are receiving good inflows, causing water levels in projects like SRSP, Sriram Sagar, and Kaleshwaram to rise rapidly. Currently, there is no threat of overflowing or flooding as the projects are receiving moderate inflows. Panchayat Raj officials are regularly monitoring villages near rivers and canals to assess the flood situation.
No major damages or breaches at irrigation projects and canals have been reported so far. The weather office predicts heavy rain in the old Medak, Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Karimnagar districts, while moderate rain is expected in the southern Telangana districts. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in Warangal, Mulugu, and Kothagudem to handle any emergencies.
