Hyderabad-based NGO Dhruvansh has introduced a new floating garbage broom at Barla Kunta Lake in Gachibowli to help clean and maintain the lake. This innovative device is designed to collect small debris like sludge and algae.
Unlike the large floating collectors used by HMDA and GHMC for cleaning city lakes, the floating garbage broom is specifically made for collecting smaller trash. It eliminates the need for workers to enter the lake manually, making the cleaning process simpler. The broom can easily reach narrow areas where JCBs cannot go, gathering trash in corners for easy collection.
Madhulika Choudhary, founder of Dhruvansh, explained that the broom is made of PVC pipe with a net that collects small trash effectively. It is designed to address the challenges of removing minute debris that large machinery or manual labor struggle with. The broom is cost-effective and can be customized based on the size of the trash.
Choudhary suggested using low-cost mechanical models for lake cleaning instead of harmful fertilisers. The NGO plans to expand the use of the floating garbage broom to other lakes after successful results at Barla Kunta Lake.
