SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) has introduced a new treatment called Plasma Exchange (PLEX) to help people with liver injury. The team at SUMUM recently conducted the first successful Plasma Exchange therapy in Odisha. A young woman with severe liver injury was treated using this advanced therapy, also known as liver dialysis. Dr. Gadadhar Panda, an Associate Consultant in the GI Sciences department, performed the procedure and mentioned that the final cycle was completed on September 22. The patient is now awaiting discharge.

The woman had been experiencing jaundice, severe itching, weight loss, and loss of appetite for over a month. After diagnosing her with severe liver injury, doctors decided to try Plasma Exchange since medication alone did not improve her condition. This therapy significantly reduced her jaundice. Dr. Ayaskant Singh, a Senior Consultant in the GI Sciences, stated that having such procedures available can save the lives of many patients with acute liver failure or injury caused by alcohol intake, drugs, dengue, or other reasons.

Dr. Sambit Bhuyan, an Associate Consultant in the GI Sciences department, and Dr. Sonam Panda from Anesthesiology also assisted in the treatment.
