Telangana Explores Paddy Export to Philippines
The Telangana government is exploring the possibility of exporting fine varieties of paddy to countries in Southeast Asia. As part of this effort, the government has started talks with the Philippines.
The Philippines has shown interest in importing 3 lakh metric tonnes of paddy from Telangana. On Saturday, Telangana’s Minister for Civil Supplies and Irrigation, N Uttam Kumar Reddy, held discussions with the Philippines’ in-charge Minister of Food and Agriculture through a video conference. These talks are important because the Philippines had stopped importing paddy and rice from India for several years, mainly due to quality concerns.
However, the quality of Telangana’s rice has improved significantly in recent years. If the ongoing negotiations succeed, this could open up a new trade route between Telangana and the Philippines. Government officials are optimistic that this deal will be beneficial for both sides.
Both Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy and the Filipino Minister expressed hope that the deal would come through soon. They emphasized mutual cooperation and said that the export of Telangana’s paddy could begin again after years of inactivity. According to officials, if this deal is finalized, it will be a major achievement for Telangana’s Civil Supplies department.
The Telangana government has been promoting the cultivation of fine varieties of paddy, which are in high demand in international markets. Currently, rice is being cultivated on over 12 million acres in Telangana, producing around 26 million tonnes annually. The state grows more than 220 varieties of paddy.
India, as a whole, has a strong presence in the global rice market, exporting to over 100 countries. Indian rice holds a 45 percent share of the global rice market. Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswar Rao stated that India will likely have even more surplus rice to export to additional countries by 2030.
