FGG urges for thorough investigation in controlling drug menace

The Forum for Good Governance (FGG) in Hyderabad praised the government’s efforts to combat drug abuse in the State. They acknowledged the work of the Anti-Narcotic Bureau in handling cases, but expressed concern that proper inquiries were not being conducted and accused individuals were not being punished as needed.

FGG also commended the government for launching an awareness campaign to discourage youth from using drugs. However, they emphasized the importance of conducting thorough investigations once cases are registered and ensuring that those responsible face consequences, which they felt was lacking.

An example cited by FGG secretary M Padmanabha Reddy highlighted a situation in 2017 where drug-peddling cases were registered at Excise stations in Medchal district. Despite a Special Investigation Team (SIT) being formed for a detailed inquiry, many of the cases resulted in acquittals after years of trials. This raised doubts about the effectiveness of the current process in bringing about justice.

Given the unresolved nature of past cases, FGG called for improved investigation procedures and timely resolution of cases within two years. They urged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to strengthen the prosecution wing to ensure that accused individuals receive appropriate punishments as a deterrent against drug-related crimes.
