The wayside market in Wanaparthy district remains closed and unused, with vines growing over the gate. Due to neglect from municipal officials, the market has become a site for anti-social activities. The public, traders, and farmers are urging authorities to bring the market into use.
Constructed on forest department land near Marrikunta area, the wayside market was meant for the public, morning walkers, commuters, and farmers to directly sell vegetables, fruits, and agricultural products. It was built with cooperation from the Scijent Company at a cost of Rs 3.40 crores, with all necessary facilities.
Considered the first of its kind in Telangana, the market was expected to benefit farmers by allowing them to sell their produce without middlemen. It was designed to offer fresh vegetables, fruits, and other agricultural products at lower prices for buyers. However, the market has been abandoned and neglected.
Despite initial excitement and hopes for the market attracting people from all around, it currently remains unused. The potential benefits of direct sales for farmers and access to fresh produce for buyers have not been realized due to lack of oversight and maintenance.
