The artificial intelligence-based facial recognition system used for recording student attendance is not working properly because many government teachers do not have enough knowledge about digital technology. Recording attendance online takes a lot of time, about 20-25 minutes, compared to the manual attendance that only takes five-ten minutes. This wastes a lot of time during the first period of class. The main issue is that teachers have to record attendance every day and send it to higher officials. However, some teachers are having difficulty using the system because they have not been properly trained and sometimes the application does not work correctly.
Ramesh, a teacher at Government High School Kacheguda, said that when the new attendance recording system was introduced, they thought it would make the process easier. But it has actually become more complicated and confusing. Another teacher mentioned that the old method of recording attendance in registers was better than the facial recognition system because they have not received proper training on how to use the application. There have also been instances where the system showed the wrong picture after capturing a student’s image.
A math teacher at Government High School, Charminar, suggested that instead of using an app-based facial attendance system, it would be better to install centralized instruments near the school gates to capture attendance. Some parents have also expressed concerns about the technology being manipulated and photos being misused, especially when taking pictures of adolescent girls.
