Experts have warned that using cough syrups that have been recently banned by the Centre may lead to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and psychological disorders. The Centre banned 14 drug combinations, including those from reputed companies, because they had no therapeutic advantages and may have side effects on those who use them. The Drugs and Cosmetic Act prohibits the manufacture, sale, and distribution of Nimesulide + Paracetamol dispersible tablets for human use. The Expert Committee recommended this ban because the combinations were not therapeutically justified and may involve risks to human beings.

According to Dr M Rajeev, an MD in Pulmonary Medicine, these banned syrups are based on codeine, which helps raise the threshold of pain for the consumer without affecting their consciousness. However, opioids (highly addictive substances) can lead to the development of psychological and physical dependence and are banned for abusive effects. They can also lead to pain pathway disturbances, psychological problems, and mental disturbances. There are two types of banned combination drugs: opioid-based and antibiotic-based. Dr Rajeev said that not all coughs are caused by infections; some may be due to irritation. For example, the combination of Bromhexine and Amoxicillin is used for more effect. However, even with the combination, there is no therapeutic advantage, but it has side effects.

Experts recommend caution when using cough syrups and suggest seeking medical advice before taking any medication. The overuse or misuse of certain drugs can lead to AMR and other harmful effects on health.
