Goods Train Derails in Peddapalli District, Raising Concerns Over Track Maintenance

A recent goods train derailment in Peddapalli district has once again highlighted concerns about poor track maintenance and outdated railway infrastructure. This incident is not an isolated case, as there have been several derailments reported this year. Experts are calling for urgent improvements to the railway system.

The derailment occurred on the Grand Trunk route, which connects Delhi to Chennai. This important railway line was disrupted for the second time in less than two months when a goods train went off the tracks between Raghavapuram and Ramagundam stations. The incident took place on the busy Kazipet-Balharshah section on Tuesday night, affecting the movement of many trains.

There have been other derailments this year as well. In January, three coaches of the Charminar Express derailed at Nampally railway station. In May, a goods train derailed on the Guntur-Secunderabad route, and a Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) train derailed near Secunderabad station.

    Causes and Consequences of Derailments

Railway experts have pointed out that most of these derailments in the South Central Railway (SCR) region have been minor. However, the aftermath creates significant confusion, leading to train cancellations, diversions, or partial cancellations. The main reasons for these derailments are poor track maintenance, ageing infrastructure, overcrowding, and a lack of manpower.

Experts suggest that more frequent patrolling and inspections by track maintenance staff could help prevent such incidents. They also noted that, according to a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, the budget for track maintenance has been reduced. Previously, 14% of the railway’s revenue was allocated for maintaining tracks, but now only 7% is being used. Funds meant for track upkeep are being diverted elsewhere, which is contributing to the issue.

    Calls for Action

Shivakumar, a retired railway employee and railway analyst, stressed the importance of investing in rail safety. “Derailment is a safety issue,” he said. “Railways should focus on upgrading infrastructure, employing modern technology, and increasing manpower to ensure the safety of passengers and goods.”

Noor, the general secretary of the Suburban Train Travellers Association, echoed these concerns. He emphasized the need for regular track inspections, better signalling systems, and more maintenance staff. Noor also suggested that railways should acquire land to build additional tracks at a safe distance from existing ones. This would ensure that if a derailment occurs on one track, the other tracks remain safe.

Both experts agree that improving track maintenance and infrastructure is crucial for preventing future derailments and ensuring the safe and timely operation of trains.
