Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted dry weather and low temperatures, dropping to around 15 degrees Celsius in some districts. These conditions may lead to the spread of acute respiratory infections, such as seasonal flu or influenza. In response, the State Health Department has issued precautionary measures to help people stay safe and healthy.

Seasonal flu, also known as influenza, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, explained that the flu is common worldwide and most people recover without needing treatment. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue.

Influenza spreads easily through coughs and sneezes from infected individuals. People with the flu are advised to rest at home, drink plenty of liquids, and avoid going out to prevent further spread. Most recover within a week. However, warning signs such as high fever, difficulty breathing, bluish skin or lips, and blood in sputum require immediate medical attention. In such cases, patients should visit the nearest government health facility or call the 108 ambulance service for assistance.

To prevent the flu, Dr. Nayak suggested some essential precautions. People should drink filtered or boiled water at home and carry bottled water when outside. Frequent handwashing, especially before and after meals or using the washroom, is crucial. Avoid crowded places and maintain a safe distance from individuals with flu symptoms. If you have a fever, cough, or sneezing, stay away from public places to protect others.

The government has also taken steps to manage flu cases by arranging special beds and providing essential medicines at public health facilities. Following these simple tips and being cautious can help reduce the risk of seasonal flu and ensure better health during this period.
