    Hyderabad: The State Government Plans to Irrigate 30 Lakh Acres in Five Years

    The State government of Hyderabad is planning to create an additional irrigation area of 30 lakh acres over the next five years.

    On Sunday, Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy shared the funding details for various projects in the Godavari and Krishna river basins. Significant funds have been allocated to several key projects in the Godavari Basin.

    The Chinna Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (LIS) will receive Rs 183.96 crore and aims to create a new irrigation area of 12,267 acres. The Modikunta Vagu project will get Rs 163.08 crore, and the Lower Penganga, including the Chanka Korata LIS project, will receive Rs 147.23 crore to develop 27,794 acres of irrigation area.

    Additionally, the Sripada Yellampally LIS will be allocated Rs 545.95 crore, targeting 41,000 acres of irrigation potential. The JCR DLIS project will have a budget of Rs 512.18 crore to develop 132,012 acres. The Sita Rama LIS, the largest allocation in the Godavari Basin, will receive Rs 1,487.31 crore to create 118,933 acres of irrigation area, including the stabilization of 111,818 acres and the creation of 7,115 new acres.

    The total proposed new irrigation area for the Godavari Basin is 332,006 acres, requiring Rs 3,039.71 crore in funds.

    In the Krishna Basin, several projects have also been prioritized. The Koil Sagar LIS will receive Rs 121.56 crore to develop 3,078 acres of irrigation area. The RBLIS project will get Rs 127.34 crore for 21,692 acres, while the JNLI project will receive Rs 67.88 crore to create 35,000 acres of irrigation area.

    The Kalwakurthy LIS project is set to receive Rs 489.16 crore, aiming for 134,994 acres of irrigation potential. The Dindi LIS will receive the largest allocation in the Krishna Basin, with Rs 1,881.1 crore to create an irrigation area of 8,000 acres. The AMR SLBC project will receive Rs 1,679.66 crore to develop 50,000 acres.

    Overall, the Krishna Basin projects will cover 252,764 acres with a total budget of Rs 4,366.72 crore.

    The Irrigation Minister stated that the total proposed irrigation area across both basins is 584,770 acres, with a combined funding requirement of Rs 7,406.43 crore for the year 2024–25. This comprehensive plan highlights the government’s strong commitment to improving the State’s irrigation infrastructure. The focus on critical projects aims to enhance water management, boost agricultural output, support farmers’ livelihoods, and contribute to the region’s overall economic growth.
