Delhi University has suggested some measures to improve security following a harassment incident at Indraprastha College for Women. The measures include installing CCTV cameras, hiring private security, restricting entry of outsiders, and increasing the height of boundary walls. The guidelines were prepared in collaboration with Delhi Police and are expected to be notified on Monday. The incident at IPCW happened during a cultural festival on March 28 when students were allegedly harassed by unknown men. The DU formed a committee on April 3 to investigate the students’ grievances and asked the panel to submit its report in a week. Though the committee is yet to submit its report, the official said they have held a series of meetings, including with the Delhi Police, to prepare guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future.
The guidelines are general and need to be followed by every college affiliated with Delhi University. They state that colleges need to take responsibility for the safety and security of the students if they are holding any events. Moreover, the college needs to install CCTVs, increase the height of boundary walls if they are too low, hire bouncers if needed, and take NOC from the Delhi Police. The official said that the major problem found in the case of IPCW was that the boundary walls were too low and there was only one exit which led to chaos.
