Hyderabad: Silent dehydration is a hidden health risk that affects many people in India, especially in hot and humid areas like Telangana. This kind of dehydration happens without obvious signs, unlike the usual thirst we associate with dehydration. As the body slowly loses fluids and electrolytes, it becomes at risk. Dehydration can happen not just due to diarrhea, but also from fever, nausea, vomiting, respiratory infections, and heat-related illnesses. In Hyderabad, there has been a 10-15% yearly increase in kidney patients because of silent dehydration. This serious issue needs immediate attention to prevent more health problems.
Dr. C. Suresh Kumar, a former Professor and Head of Pediatrics at Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad, highlights the importance of recognizing and dealing with silent dehydration. He explains that water alone isn’t enough to treat this condition because it lacks necessary electrolytes. These electrolytes are crucial for nerve and muscle function and overall cellular activity. In non-diarrheal conditions, the body’s energy demands increase, making electrolyte drinks with energy important for recovery. While WHO ORS is good for dehydration from diarrhea, it’s not enough for non-diarrheal conditions. Ready-to-serve electrolyte drinks can be more convenient and effective.
It’s crucial to raise awareness about the need for proper fluid and electrolyte intake, especially for high-risk groups like children and the elderly. Diseases like dengue can cause severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances if not managed properly. Tragic events in India, such as the deaths of 13 people from dehydration and heatstroke during a public event in Maharashtra, and similar cases in Indore and Hyderabad, highlight the severity of this issue. These incidents show the urgent need to address and prevent silent dehydration to protect vulnerable groups.
Prof. Dr. N. L. Sridhar from the Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Hyderabad, emphasizes the importance of hydration for maintaining health and aiding recovery in non-diarrheal conditions. Oral fluids and electrolytes are essential not only for hydration but also for overall recovery. Silent dehydration can develop quickly, especially in children and the elderly, leading to long-term health problems. Therefore, proactive hydration is crucial, particularly in extreme climates and during physical activities, to prevent serious health issues and ensure overall well-being.
