Decks have been cleared for the establishment of Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in Mulugu, Telangana. The Central Universities (Amendment), Bill, 2023 has been passed by both houses of parliament. The Lok Sabha passed the bill on December 7, and the Rajya Sabha passed it on December 13.

The Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, expressed his gratitude to all the MPs who voted for the bill and said that it reflects the collective commitment to improving access and quality of higher education in the country. He mentioned that the university will cater to regional aspirations and promote research among tribal communities.

The university will have graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral level courses under five schools with 11 departments. It will be established for Rs. 889.07 crore and is expected to have 2790 UG and PG students in the first seven years of operation. The establishment of the university will create direct employment opportunities and also generate indirect employment through outsourcing and commercial activities.

The university has been named “Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University” after the mother and daughter, Sammakka and Saralamma, who are believed to protect the tribal communities of Telangana. Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, G Kishan Reddy, also expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for fulfilling this promise.
