Around 50% of road accidents in the Indian state of Telangana happen in the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda police commissionerates, according to the state’s Director General of Police, Anjani Kumar. The official data revealed that 16% of accidents occur in Cyberabad, 16% in Rachakonda and 12% in Hyderabad. The districts of Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Narayan Pet and Jayashankar Bhupalapalli record fewer accidents. During a video conference with district police officials, Kumar praised Mulugu for reducing road accidents by 47% and deaths by 63%. He identified accident hot spots and asked officials to review the performance of 108 vehicles. District Collectors and officials in relevant departments were asked to coordinate with voluntary organisations to prevent accidents. Committees will be formed in all villages to create awareness among people on a large scale, with retired teachers and women representatives of voluntary organisations appointed as members. The number of road accidents has risen alongside increased road construction, although the number of accidents and deaths decreased between 2021 and 2023. The government is encouraging eye tests for drivers over 45 years old and highlighting the need to be extra vigilant during rush hour, between 6am-9am and 3pm-5pm.
