Hyderabad: To prevent incidents involving homeless people in the city, Police Commissioner C V Anand held a meeting with officials from various government departments and NGOs. The meeting took place at the Command and Control Centre on Tuesday.
During the meeting, they discussed the increasing number of homeless people, including those with mental health issues. Commissioner Anand also talked about the role of some of these individuals in crimes. The discussion aimed to find solutions for this growing problem.
The group came up with a plan to identify homeless individuals, mentally ill persons, rag pickers, and drunkards. They decided to provide immediate shelter and improve medical and mental health services for those living on the streets. The goal is to prevent them from getting involved in crime.
Another decision was to establish a geo-tagging system to identify places of worship in each police area. The police will work closely with local community members to strengthen relationships and ensure safety.
As a safety measure, they suggested installing CCTVs, gates, and lock systems around prayer halls. If any suspicious mentally unstable person is seen, they should be reported immediately to the police. The police will then take them to the hospital for a check-up and later to a shelter home if needed.
Commissioner Anand pointed out that many incidents involving homeless people have taken place in the city. He stressed that some of these individuals, especially those with mental challenges, are causing disturbances at religious events and places. He warned that if not controlled, such situations could lead to bigger problems with law and order.
All departments present at the meeting agreed to work together on a detailed action plan. They acknowledged the challenges posed by the city’s growing population.
Several senior officials attended the meeting, including Dr. Soumya Mishra (DGP, Prisoners, Correctional Service), Vikram Singh Man (Additional CP, Law and Order), and other high-ranking officers from various departments like Social Welfare, Drug Control, Traffic, Railways, and Mental Health services.
