The Telangana Congress has requested the President to urge the Union government for a CBI investigation into the failure of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project and the protection of people in the Godavari catchment. They sent a letter to President Droupadi Murmu to inform her about the recent sinking of piers at Medigadda and water leakage from the Annaram barrage in the project. Additionally, a committee led by a member of the National Dam Safety Authority found technical issues during a field study of the Medigadda barrage.
The party highlighted that the project barrages were constructed using loans from public sector banks and funding agencies like the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), Power Finance Corporation (PFC), and NABARD. These funds were provided to the Kaleshwaram Corporation, which is registered under the Companies Act. Therefore, they believe that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Serious Fraud Investigation Organization (SFIO), National Dam Safety Authority, and Enforcement Directorate (ED) should investigate these alleged illegalities.
The party has demanded that the President and Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan instruct the Centre to oversee the repairs and safety measures for the three Kaleshwaram barrages. This is to prevent any harm to humans or property due to sudden damages or water releases. They also want the CBI to investigate as approximately Rs. 80,000 crore in loan money was obtained from Central government lending agencies and public sector banks.
