The traffic police in the Rajendra Nagar area of Rangareddy district have been forcing commuters to pay their pending traffic fines on the spot, rather than focusing on regulating traffic to prevent jams. This has led to regular traffic jams in areas such as Durga Nagar Cross Roads, Aram Ghar, Shivrampally Kenworth Cross Road, Dairy Farm Cross Roads, and Attapur in Rajendra Nagar. The Aram Ghar cross road is also known for drunk driving cases.
Residents of Rajendra Nagar have expressed frustration with the traffic police for harassing commuters on the roads, particularly at dairy farm and Aram Ghar cross roads, even for small pending fines ranging from Rs 200-300. Instead of regulating traffic, the traffic police constables are seen noting down number plates and checking for pending fines before pressuring commuters to pay on the spot.
Residents have criticized the traffic police for prioritizing revenue collection and deploying teams of constables at busy junctions to meet monthly targets. Abdul Rehman, a resident of Shivrampally, shared his experience of being approached by a constable while waiting at a signal. Despite not violating any traffic rules, he was informed that he had two pending fines and was asked to pay immediately.
When contacted, Traffic Inspector Bose Kiran denied the existence of fixed targets for revenue collection and stated that the negative image of traffic police often leads to blame from the public.
