Hyderabad: A meeting on domestic violence was held on Monday by the Women and Children Safety Wing (W&CSW). It included representatives from SHE Teams, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Sakhi Centre, and Bharosa Centre. The main goal was to improve coordination and develop better ways to address and prevent domestic violence.
The aim of the meeting was to coordinate efforts and enhance support systems for victims of domestic violence. This ensures that victims receive comprehensive and timely assistance.
During the meeting, W&CSW DCP Srujana Karnam stressed the importance of working together to tackle domestic violence. She included district welfare officers from Ranga Reddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and Sangareddy districts, as well as representatives from Sakhi Centres and the Centre for Development and Empowerment of Women (CDEW).
DCP Karnam emphasized the need for a unified approach to support victims and ensure their safety. This requires strengthened mechanisms and prompt responses.
The meeting highlighted the commitment of the Cyberabad police and associated welfare organizations to tackle domestic violence in a comprehensive manner. The goal is to create a safer environment for all and ensure that victims receive the necessary support and justice.
Representatives from Bharosa centres explained that domestic violence can be inflicted by any relative. It is usually suffered by women from male family members or relatives. The abuse can be physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, or economic, leaving the victim unable to stand up for her rights.
Many laws have been enacted to curb domestic violence. One of the earliest is the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1861, which made giving and receiving dowry a crime.
The most recent law is the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA) of 2005. This civil law broadens the definition of domestic violence.
