India has reached a major milestone in coal production, surpassing one billion tonnes (BT) on March 20 for the fiscal year 2024-25. This achievement came 11 days earlier than last year’s total of 997.83 million tonnes (MT). The increase in coal production highlights India’s progress in meeting its energy needs and supporting industrial, agricultural, and economic growth.

Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy credited this success to the hard work of Coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), private companies, and about 5 lakh mine workers. These workers, operating in over 350 coal mines, have overcome many challenges with dedication, making this record-breaking production possible.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged this milestone in a social media post, calling it a “proud moment for India.” He emphasized that reaching one billion tonnes of coal production reflects the country’s commitment to energy security, economic growth, and self-reliance. He also praised the dedication and hard work of those in the coal sector.

Coal is a crucial part of India’s energy supply, accounting for about 55% of the country’s total energy mix. Additionally, around 74% of India’s electricity is generated from coal-based power plants. This highlights the essential role of coal in maintaining energy security and supporting the economy.

The increase in coal production is due to government reforms and policies, including amendments to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and the introduction of commercial coal block auctions for private companies. These measures have boosted domestic coal availability, reducing the need for imports and saving foreign exchange. From April to December 2024, India’s coal imports dropped by 8.4%, saving approximately $5.43 billion (Rs 42,315.7 crore) compared to the same period last year.

Minister Kishan Reddy stated that this achievement aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India). The Ministry of Coal continues to focus on self-sufficiency in the energy sector while promoting sustainable development.

Beyond just coal production, this milestone strengthens India’s long-term energy security and economic growth. By adopting advanced mining techniques, improving logistics, and encouraging sustainable practices, the coal sector is playing a key role in enhancing India’s energy infrastructure.

This achievement also supports the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision, which aims to make India fully self-reliant in energy. With continued reforms, technological progress, and responsible resource management, India is on the right path toward long-term energy security. Minister Reddy emphasized that this milestone reflects the country’s dedication to ensuring a stable and self-sufficient future for generations to come.
