Hyderabad: 25-Year Plan to Solve Drinking Water Issues in Greater Hyderabad

The Chief Minister of Telangana, A Revanth Reddy, has introduced a 25-year action plan to address the drinking water issues in Greater Hyderabad. As part of this initiative, he approved a project to lift 20 tmcft of water from Mallanna Sagar under the Godavari Phase-2 project. The water will cater to the growing drinking water needs of the state’s capital. Additionally, new water pipelines will be installed to reduce leakages and ensure a steady supply of water for domestic use. The state plans to seek financial support from the central government through the Jal Jeevan Mission.

During a review meeting with officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), the Chief Minister stressed the importance of planning for the future. He asked the officials to develop infrastructure and assess the water needs of the city’s population until 2050, given the rapid expansion of Greater Hyderabad. The action plan aims to secure safe drinking water for the city’s residents over the next few decades.

The Chief Minister approved a proposal to lift 20 tmcft of water from Mallanna Sagar based on consultancy reports that highlighted the availability of water and cost-effectiveness of the project. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the drinking water supply to Hyderabad.

Addressing the financial challenges faced by the water board, the CM expressed concern over its growing debt. He directed officials to find ways to increase the board’s income. According to Water Board MD Ashok Reddy, the board is burdened with dues of Rs 4,300 crore from various government departments and offices. Additionally, the board owes Rs 5,500 crore in electricity bills and Rs 1,847 crore in loans, resulting in a total revenue deficit of Rs 8,800 crore.

To address these challenges, the Chief Minister asked the water board to collect pending water bill payments regularly. He also suggested raising funds for new projects through alternative methods, such as securing low-interest loans.

Officials informed the CM about water pipeline leakages, which contribute to water loss. In response, the Chief Minister proposed constructing a modern pipeline system as an alternative to the old one. He also urged the officials to prepare a detailed project report and explore funding options from the Union government under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

This comprehensive plan aims to ensure a steady and sustainable drinking water supply for the rapidly growing city, while also addressing the financial and infrastructural issues plaguing the water board.
