Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has announced that the Women’s University will be named after Chakali Ilamma, a well-known woman fighter during the Telangana Armed Struggle. In addition, he shared that Ilamma’s granddaughter, Shweta, will be appointed as a member of the State Women’s Commission.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that Ilamma’s family will be involved as partners in the government. He emphasized that his government will continue to uphold the spirit of Ilamma’s fight for justice.

Speaking at the death anniversary programme of Veeranari Chakali Ilamma at Ravindra Bharathi on Tuesday, Revanth Reddy highlighted Ilamma’s fight against feudal rulers for the land rights of the poor. He said that Ilamma’s courage inspired former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to introduce land reforms in the country.

The CM further explained that owning land represents self-esteem for the poor. This, he said, was the reason Indira Gandhi distributed millions of acres of land to the needy. Reddy also criticized previous governments, accusing them of trying to take land from the poor under the guise of the Dharani scheme.

He concluded by saying that the current government, inspired by Ilamma’s legacy, is committed to protecting the land rights of the poorer sections of society.
