The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has not yet cleaned up the remains of idols and puja items from Saroornagar lake and other prominent lakes in the city, even though it has been over a week since the Ganesh immersion ceremony. This is causing problems for residents living near these lakes, as a foul smell is coming from the lakes.

The same situation is happening at Neknampur lake, where only the idol debris has been cleared but other puja items are still piled up near the lake. Despite complaints from locals, sanitation workers have not taken action to address the issue.

The incomplete removal of debris from the lake has led to an increase in seasonal flu cases in the area. Only a small amount of debris has been cleared, and some remnants are still floating on the lake’s surface. The trash that has been collected so far has been dumped near the lake, causing difficulties for about 200 families living nearby.

The foul odor from the lake has prevented residents from opening their windows for the past week. The decomposition of puja items, which mostly consist of flowers and leaves, is making the situation worse. If the debris is not removed promptly, it will not only cause problems for residents but also harm the lake’s environment.

After the immersion, it is the responsibility of officials to clean up the trash, but this has not happened, and residents do not know how much debris has been collected so far.

Residents of Saroornagar have faced a nightmare in the past week. The idol debris and puja items near the lake have caused an increase in mosquitoes, posing a serious health risk. Authorities need to take immediate action to remove this trash and improve the situation.

It is disheartening that this problem happens every year. Remnants of Plaster of Paris (PoP) floating in the lake and the delayed removal of trash by officials create significant challenges. This problem continues until after Dussehra, affecting both residents and the environment.

Complaints to officials without any action can be frustrating. Authorities need to take long-term measures to prevent these recurring issues and ensure timely and effective removal of debris and waste to protect the community and the environment.
