Hyderabad: The Union Home Ministry has sent nine additional teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to Telangana. These teams were dispatched from Chennai, Visakhapatnam, and Assam due to the heavy rains that have been pouring down on the state for the past two days. The rains have caused severe flooding, affecting over 110 villages.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, informed Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the serious situation. He explained that many villages and housing colonies were underwater, with Khammam and Warangal districts being the worst affected.
Kumar specifically mentioned that over 110 villages were flooded in Khammam district alone. In Khammam town, nine people were trapped in floodwaters in the Prakashnagar area. In another area, Ajmira Thanda in the Paleru Assembly segment, 68 people were also trapped, while 42 others took shelter on apartment buildings waiting to be rescued.
Kumar asked senior NDRF officials to coordinate closely with state officials to manage the situation. He also spoke to Telangana State Revenue Minister, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, assuring him of all possible help.
Minister Srinivas Reddy informed Kumar that floodwaters had inundated the Rajeev Gruhakalpa houses in the Karunagiri area of Khammam town. He added that the entire town was flooded, and all transport lines into and out of the town were cut off.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, advised people to stay indoors as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more heavy rains for the next 24 hours. He noted that many areas were submerged in water, power lines were down, and drains were overflowing.
Minister Reddy also urged BJP members, leaders, and people’s representatives to help with rescue and relief efforts. Earlier in the morning, BJP Tamil Nadu co-in-charge Dr. Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy called for the intervention of Union ministers from Telangana to step up rescue operations in the flood-hit areas of Khammam.
