A central team recently visited the Medigadda barrage in the Kaleshwaram project to inspect the sunk pillars. The central government formed a committee of six experts, led by National Dam Safety Authority Anil Jain, to investigate the issue. The team conducted their inspection on Tuesday.

The committee’s main tasks are to assess the strength of the barrage, determine the extent of the damage, and identify the cause of the crack in the 20th pillar. They will then submit a detailed report to the Central Hydropower Department for further action. The Kaleswaram ENC Venkateswarlu and representatives accompanied the central team during the inspection.

Currently, the water level in the barrage is at its lowest point. Around 22,500 cusecs of water is being released downstream through 57 gates. On the night of the 21st of this month, the 20th pillar of the barrage sank after a loud noise. As a result, the bridge connecting pillars 18, 19, 20, and 21 of B-Block also sank by one foot.
