CCMB Hosts Young Innovators Programme for Students
The CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad held its 12th annual Young Innovators Programme on Friday. This event brought together 24 students from grades 8 to 10, selected from 24 different schools across Hyderabad.
Officials revealed that these students were chosen from a pool of 326 applicants. Over the course of a week, the participants explored various CCMB labs and research facilities. They learned how DNA is used to detect genetic diseases, studied the biology of pathogens to understand infectious diseases, and saw how advanced tools like cryo-electron microscopes reveal biomolecules at the atomic level. These experiences also demonstrated how modern biology contributes to making better crop varieties and conserving nature.
Dr. Somdatta Karak, Head of Science Communication and Public Outreach at CCMB, explained the purpose of the programme. “We focus on high school students up to grade 10 because this is when they decide whether to pursue biology. Many students think of biology as just natural history. Our programme shows them the exciting opportunities that modern biology offers,” she said.
One of the participants, S. Hitesh from Oak Valley School, shared his experience. “The Young Innovators Programme was amazing. I got to see how scientists work and discovered a whole new world of research. Meeting passionate researchers and bonding with other students my age made it unforgettable,” he said.
Dr. Vinay K. Nandicoori, Director of CCMB, highlighted the broader goals of the programme. “Every year, we connect with brilliant young minds through this initiative. While only a few may choose to become scientists, the main goal is to inspire a love for discovery and problem-solving. Regardless of the careers they pursue, we hope they become citizens inspired by science,” he said.
The Young Innovators Programme continues to spark curiosity and excitement for science among students, leaving a lasting impact on their educational journeys.
