Hyderabad: Citizens Warned Against Illegal Garbage Dumping
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is taking strong action to stop people from dumping garbage in open areas. To address this issue, GHMC is using new technology. They are installing CCTV cameras and loudspeakers at garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) to catch and stop people who throw garbage illegally.
When someone dumps garbage at these points, the cameras will activate a system that sounds an alarm. A voice message will also play, and the act of throwing garbage will be recorded on video. This video will be used to impose fines on those who break the rules.
Many people are avoiding the proper way of disposing of waste by not handing it over to Swachh auto workers, trying to save money. Instead, they are dumping it in open spaces, on roadsides, and at GVPs. To combat this, GHMC’s Uppal division has already installed 23 CCTV cameras in various areas like Ramanthapur, Uppal Little Flower School, Chilkanagar, Habsiguda, and Venkateshwara Colony. Uppal circle Deputy Commissioner G. Anjaneyyulu led this initiative with help from community and resident welfare associations.
Anjaneyyulu described this as a “virtual war against garbage-throwers.” He explained that the cameras and loudspeakers work together to detect littering, sound a siren, and play a voice message. The video footage helps to identify repeat offenders and penalize them.
So far, more than 200 people have been fined, and GHMC has collected around Rs 1.2 lakh in penalties. To control the growing issue of illegal dumping, GHMC plans to expand this initiative across Greater Hyderabad.
Anjaneyyulu also urged citizens to cooperate with the civic body in keeping the city clean. He reminded everyone that just like we keep our homes and workplaces tidy, it is equally important to maintain cleanliness in our surroundings.
