Heavy Traffic Jams Plague Mehdipatnam-Tolichowki-Shaikpet Stretch
One of Hyderabad’s busiest roads, the Mehdipatnam-Tolichowki-Shaikpet stretch, is facing severe traffic jams throughout the day. This 3-kilometer-long route has become a nightmare for commuters due to ongoing civic projects, dug-up roads, potholes, and dust. Residents of nearby areas like Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, and Shaikpet are equally affected, as by-lanes are clogged with vehicles, and most roads are under construction.
Every day, an estimated 80,000 to 1,00,000 vehicles pass through this stretch, which serves as a key link to the city’s IT corridor. The result is bumper-to-bumper traffic and frequent gridlocks, making travel frustrating for commuters. Both sides of the road are packed with vehicles, creating chaos and leaving motorists struggling to navigate.
Slow Progress of Civic Works Adds to Woes
The slow pace of ongoing civic projects has worsened the situation. While the Hyderabad city police had earlier cleared encroachments under Operation ROPE, recent work by the electricity department has undone much of that progress, returning the area to a state of disarray.
Mohammed Nayeem, a resident of Samtha Colony and a regular commuter, shared his frustration. “Traveling from Mehdipatnam to Tolichowki should take only 10-15 minutes, but now it takes over half an hour. For the past week, traffic jams have been unbearable, and commuters are losing patience,” he said.
Multiple Construction Projects Causing Delays
Various civic works are underway across Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, 7 Tombs Road, Hakeempet, and Shaikpet. These include the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP), sewerage pipeline installations, construction of box drains, laying of new roads, and underground wiring. Many of these projects have been ongoing for several months, with no clear end in sight.
“The pipeline work on 7 Tombs Road has been going on for over a year now,” said Asif Hussain, a resident of Surya Nagar Colony. “The long traffic jams, dust, and potholes have made daily life extremely difficult for residents and businesses.”
Flyovers Provide Little Relief
Despite the presence of two flyovers at Tolichowki and Shaikpet, the traffic situation remains dire. Shahid Ali, a regular commuter, noted that even the police struggle to manage the chaotic traffic.
Adding to the public’s frustration is the delay in implementing proposed road development projects outlined in the Master Plan 2021. These plans, intended to address the growing traffic woes, are still awaiting approval, leaving commuters with no immediate relief in sight.
The ongoing challenges have left residents and motorists desperate for solutions, as the combination of civic works and traffic mismanagement continues to disrupt daily life.
