The Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) is facing challenges in its functioning due to a dispute among the ruling BRS Council members. This has led to a delay in approving the annual budget of the urban local body.
The Council meeting scheduled for February 29 was cancelled because of a revolt by Corporators against Mayor Gundu Sudharani. Some BRS Corporators have switched to the Congress party, and there are concerns about a potential no-confidence motion against Sudharani.
As a result of this conflict, the annual budget has not been introduced yet. With only 10 days left until the end of the current budget cycle, officials and Corporators are unsure how the ULB will operate from April 1. The situation has been further complicated by the model code of conduct in place for general elections.
GWMC commissioner Ashwini Tanaji Wakade has raised this issue with Municipal Administration Director D Divya and Hanumakonda district collector Sikta Patnaik. Efforts are being made to convene a special council meeting to introduce the 2024-25 budget. If the standoff continues, the district collector may need to oversee essential spending for the GWMC.
