Hyderabad: BRS Party working president, KT Rama Rao, on Tuesday urged party members across Telangana to celebrate a recent decision by the Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC). The ERC stopped a proposed increase in electricity tariffs that would have added a burden of ₹18,500 crore on the public.
Rama Rao highlighted that the BRS Party, which has not raised power charges in the last ten years, played a key role in convincing the ERC to reject the hike. He explained that the party actively participated in a public hearing to oppose the tariff increase, and within just ten months, succeeded in blocking it. He called this a historic moment, noting that it was the first time in the undivided State’s history that such a major hike proposal was turned down after opposition arguments were heard.
Rao further expressed that the rejection of the tariff hike showed that the voice of the people, represented by the main opposition, had been heard. He explained that the government’s attempt to increase electricity charges was carefully and scientifically presented before the ERC, which ultimately led to the decision in favor of the public.
Following instructions from BRS Party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, KTR, along with former energy minister G Jagadishwar Reddy and other senior leaders, argued against the tariff hike. Several leaders, including former minister V Prashant Reddy and ex-speaker Madhusudana Chary, also took part in presenting the people’s concerns. KTR recalled personally participating in a tariff hike referendum in Sirisilla, where he helped convince the ERC to side with the public.
KTR thanked the ERC for standing with the people and preventing an additional financial burden. He then called for celebrations in every district and constituency to mark the victory on behalf of the people.
