The main Opposition party, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), is planning to bring a no-confidence motion against Hyderabad Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi. The party has two main goals with this move. First, it wants to address the issue of corporators who have left the party. Second, it aims to counter the perception that the BRS and BJP are aligned.

In the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the BRS was previously in power with support from the AIMIM. However, the political scenario shifted after the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and some other leaders joined the Congress. This weakened the BRS’s hold on the civic body. Additionally, some BRS corporators defected to the BJP. With the current GHMC term nearing its end, the Municipal Act allows a no-trust motion after four years, which has now been completed. Though there is almost a year left before the next GHMC elections, the BRS sees this as an opportunity to settle scores with the Congress.

Another key reason for the no-confidence motion is to counter Congress’s claims that the BRS and BJP are working together. By moving the motion, the BRS believes it can show that the BJP will not support them, thus disproving these allegations.

The idea of a no-confidence motion was reportedly discussed during a meeting at Sanathnagar MLA T Srinivas Yadav’s residence. When reporters asked about the purpose of the meeting, Yadav described it as a casual get-together with city MLAs over lunch. He explained that they discussed various topics, including festivals, public issues, and political matters. However, when asked specifically about the no-trust motion, Yadav did not confirm any concrete plans.

There were also rumors that some BRS leaders, including MLA Danam Nagender, might return to the party. Yadav dismissed these speculations, stating that no discussions on this topic had taken place during the meeting. “If there was any discussion, we could talk about it. But since there wasn’t, there’s nothing to say,” he remarked.
