Hyderabad Design Forum is a group of architects who started in 2015 and work voluntarily to promote design. They organize design workshops, exhibitions, and other activities in Hyderabad and other places.
In 2014, a stepwell was discovered in Sangareddy district. This led to a research project involving 14 architects, surveyors, and a photographer. They visited different places in Telangana and Hyderabad and found 175 stepwells of different types in temples, serais, mosques, forts, villages, and agricultural areas. The book they wrote is a study of stepwells and their significance in the history of Telangana. It includes essays on various aspects like history, construction techniques, and iconography, supported by drawings, sketches, and photographs. The research took 5 years.
This book will help people understand the importance of stepwells in Telangana’s history and can be a reference for architects, historians, and others interested in public spaces. Restoring these ancient water structures will also benefit the surrounding communities. The book was curated and edited by ArYeshwant Ramamurthy, the President of Hyderabad Design Forum, and received support from HMDA and the Telangana government.
Overall, this book aims to raise awareness about the architectural heritage of stepwells in Telangana and their importance in the region’s history.
