The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly opposed the Telangana government’s proposal to sell 400 acres of land belonging to the University of Hyderabad (UoH). Union Ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, along with MP Eatala Rajender, publicly supported students protesting the sale. In response, the BJP announced a set of three key demands on Tuesday.
BJP state general secretary Kasam Venkateswarlu addressed the media, stating the party’s firm opposition to the land sale. He demanded the immediate cancellation of the proposal and called for lifting restrictions placed on Osmania University students. The BJP also urged the withdrawal of all cases filed against journalists, arguing that these actions were attempts to suppress media freedom.
Additionally, Venkateswarlu condemned the arrests of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leaders who were peacefully protesting the sale of university land. He criticized Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s government for failing to explore alternative solutions to the state’s financial crisis. Selling university land worth Rs 10,000 crore, he argued, would harm future generations and violate students’ right to education.
The BJP highlighted the importance of Hyderabad Central University (HCU), which is ranked fourth in the country and is often called the “Lungs of Hyderabad.” The university is home to natural landmarks such as Mushroom Rock and Peacock Lake, which support a rich variety of bird species. The party argued that selling such ecologically valuable land for short-term financial gain would be an irresponsible act.
The party also criticized the restrictions placed on Osmania University, a historic center for student activism. They called these measures undemocratic and condemned the arrests of students who protested against them. The BJP warned the government against adopting a repressive approach similar to the previous BRS government under former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, which had implemented strict measures and demolished Indira Park.
Finally, the BJP accused Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjuna Kharge, and Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, of misleading the public with false promises during the Telangana State Assembly elections. The party alleged that CM Revanth Reddy’s government is now enforcing a “seventh guarantee” by using police force to silence dissent, which they claimed threatens democracy in the state.
