The Telangana BJP is gearing up for the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections by beginning its preparations a year in advance. As part of its strategy, the party has launched protests against the State government’s Musi Riverfront Development Project (MRDP). The BJP is hoping that this move will energize its members and leaders in the GHMC areas, who have been relatively inactive since the last parliamentary elections.
In the 2020 GHMC elections, the BJP managed to secure 48 corporator seats out of 150 wards. Party leaders believe that their second-place standing in many of the remaining wards could turn into victories in the 2025 elections. The BJP is focusing on these wards, aiming to improve its position and win more seats.
A senior leader from the BJP told The Hans India that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) won 56 wards in 2020, and these seats will be crucial in the upcoming elections. The leader emphasized that whoever can make the most gains this time will likely control the GHMC.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) currently dominates 50 wards in the civic body, while the Congress holds just two seats. The Congress is reportedly trying to convince BRS corporators to switch sides and join them, hoping to weaken the BRS and strengthen its own position in Hyderabad.
Meanwhile, the BJP believes that the MRDP could negatively impact the Congress’s prospects. BJP leaders are encouraging their local representatives to take advantage of the situation and push their campaign. Additionally, the BJP sees an opportunity to gain support in parts of the Old City, where the MRDP may displace residents, potentially weakening AIMIM’s grip on 41 wards in the area.
By focusing on these strategies, the BJP hopes to increase its influence and possibly win control of the GHMC in 2025.
